When a dog gets dementia, they can’t recognize the owner, and make mistakes urinating in the house. Dogs are the only animals that get dementia like humans.
Both dogs and humans have the same cause of dementia. And now a Korean research team developed the world’s first treatment for dog dementia and is about to commercialize it. Could this remedy be a step towards conquering human dementia?

Researchers at a domestic biotechnology company have developed a new drug for treating dogs with dementia for the first time. It has even been approved by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Quarantine.
After this drug was given to dogs with mild or severe dementia, a poodle regained a sense of direction in eight weeks, and a chihuahua recognized its owner as it used to, and a maltese regained a sense of smell to find food hidden in cups. As a result of the experiment, the risk of dementia among the tested 48 dogs fell to the normal range of 40 points proving the effectiveness of dementia treatment.
Both dogs and humans have the same cause of dementia. In both cases, a protein residue called amyloid beta accumulates in the brain. Naturally, the researchers’ next goal is to conduct clinical trials to 200 dementia patients by the end of this year.
